A year ago I moved back to my (affluent) hometown. Since then I’ve been overwhelmed by the trauma I see - many classmates dead or dying of drug/alcohol/tobacco overdose, in prison for drug-induced murder, estranged from their families. One came to my door the other night and asked for $40 to reconnect his phone - I later learned it was to buy crack.

We live in a deeply traumatized society, and that manifests in destructive behaviors. I’ve had to confront my own part in this as I see my parents’ mistakes repeated on my own children; not just by me but by their purported professional carers as well.

So, how do we stop this madness? To my

mind, it is with love, compassion, and forgiveness. I love my children, and was an innocent child once - with what I’ve experienced, how could I not make these mistakes? And how could I possibly grow out of them without forgiveness?

For me a critically important experience was the deep, lasting sense of these truths that came under MDMA and the care of a loving guide. Such treatment is becoming much more common, much more available to those most in need. Of course this is only one way into love.

May ever more of us experience an opening of the heart.
