What do you do when the car is crashing and the Cathedral is crumbling?

It is bracing to witness the collapse of our system in real time. It is a bit like watching a slow-motion car crash while you are both trapped inside the slowly crumpling, burning vehicle while watching it from outside the car, just before you start to smell your own burning flesh.

From the inside, you might say to yourself: Jeepers, American citizens are starting to get detained by ICE agents at the border and Trump says he intends to throw “homegrowns” (what a word choice!) into El Salvadoran concentration camps for life with no legal recourse while he is intentionally destroying the economy to ruin the Middle Class, while he is attacking universities and doing away with climate protections and regulations that stop corporations from exploiting people and nature, while our arrogant super-wealthy “Red Tech” elite who stole the Internet from the people stand by this fascistic monstrosity and do nothing, while 45% of Americans are still okay with this, and there is not even anything approaching an adequate resistance or countermovement in this country, and this is all just fucking terrifying. From the outside POV, you might find yourself thinking: Well, isn’t it interesting from a historical vantage point that, as happened in Weimer Germany, our mainstream progressive establishment was utterly incapable of responding to this nightmare over the last decade when they needed to confront it, that they remain completely fucking useless, because if Obama or Clinton had just raised the fucking minimum wage and not screwed over the working class for decades we might not be facing the complete destruction of America as well as the world?

As Kurt Vonnegut put it, “So it goes.”

It turns out that even the wealthy establishment editorial writers over at The New York Times — Curtis Yarvin’s despised “Cathedral” — now find themselves very, very worried. I almost feel sorry for the neoconservative war-hawk David Brooks, who I have disliked for decades. Now that Trump has refused to comply with the Supreme Court — who gave him total immunity in what must be the worst decision in Supreme Court history — over the very simple order to “facilitate” the return of an utterly innocent human being from an El Salvadoran gulag with no legal protections, Brooks is suddenly realizing we need the kind of massive civil society movement that he has argued against, derided, and mocked for his entire career. Whoops!
