Well said. I think your darker view is somewhat more like what the near-term future will turn out to be, yet with some of your other projections also playing a part in the mix. Personally I have little hope that we will find true technological fixes; we are not yet that wise, or cooperative. Then there are the inevitable natural disasters that happen with regularity, which are beyond our ability to control. This all leads me to expect a hard reset.
A wild card is the coming Aquarian Age, which is an actual astronomical event. We have seen these epochs come and go, and they significantly change our species each time as they push our evolution along. A coming society that is more humanitarian, more about brotherhood could eventually well come about over the next 2000 years. It might look a little more like China than the US (which scares some people, perhaps unnecessarily), tho I wouldn't expect to really look like any current societies.
One other comment. Historically, as far as we can ascertain from archaeology and the DNA record, there have never been nearly this many humans. We have upset the historical natural balance by 2 (or possibly 4-5) orders of magnitude. That is significant. There is no way to do that without stealing habitat from pre-existing plant and animal life, a questionable pursuit. I use that phrase because most people, even those concerned about the environment, do not question the role of population in the problem. I have no idea how we can control the individuals' urge to procreate, but I believe it will have to happen, one way or another. Finally, I expect nature / consciousness will take care of this and all other problems in the long run, as it always has. Evolution is slow, but in the biggest picture it is unstoppable. As we are that consciousness, we really have nothing to worry about (on that level anyway).
