The Musk Who Wanted to Be King

An ambitious plan for world domination!

I’m starting to feel slight cautious optimism that the Democrats will win this election — at least holding onto the Executive Branch. Michael Moore has good political radar — he predicted Trump’s victory in 2016, Biden in 2020 — and he believes Harris and Walz will win this time by a comfortable margin. Early voting seems to indicate a groundswell of support for the Democrats. Recent polls — particularly Republican ones which have them equal or Trump a bit ahead — may have been skewed to demoralize Democrats and ready the terrain for post-election challenges. It is hard, considering everything Trump does and says, to believe it is this close.

We definitely need to keep pushing right now. I am advocating that people use and promote the Reach app: https://www.reach.vote . It has been used to great effect in local elections. The idea is to use our personal networks to ferret out and contact uncommitted voters, particularly in swing states, and influence them to vote for the Democrats.

It would be great if Democrats not only won the executive branch (which we could still easily lose) but also both houses of Congress. We truly need to drive this Fascist menace far from our doorstep. Then we can deal with the real issues facing us — above all the ecological emergency, which is very dire. We should also rally to address wealth inequality and oligarchic privilege. We must break corporate control of our public sphere, via anti-trust legislation. And so on…

I am infuriated by the spectacle of Elon Musk — a white colonialist South African who benefited from apartheid — giving out $1 million checks every day to random registered voters in Pennsylvania. It is so deeply cynical and amoral. It is a total betrayal of our country’s ideals and values. I hope it backfires on him and his cronies. I hope they lose this election. I hope they are publicly disgraced, humiliated.

Even if the (annoyingly mediocre) Democrats win this election against an opposition that has revealed itself to be Fascist to the core — Trump’s former chief of staff, John Kelly, a Far Right conservative, now says Trump will “rule as a dictator” and openly admires Hitler — we must recognize our system is badly broken and corrupt. We can’t go to sleep again, as we did when Biden won against Trump. We need to build a new movement of civil society — by the people and for the people — to restore and replenish America, from its roots. I do not know if we have it in us. I’m willing to help.
