The Rubik's Cube Puzzle at the End of Time

Finding a faith I didn't know I had

We’ve reached an evolutionary precipice for humanity. This is what I felt yesterday, watching as much as I could bear of the horrifying, shameful meeting between Trump, Vance and Zelensky. We’re not going to survive much longer as a species with these types of despicable, deceitful, bigoted, vicious, vengeful, evil liars running the show. We have to get out of this clusterfuck somehow. We must overcome this nightmare, then build an authentically humane and ecologically resilient society in its place. This is the Rubik’s cube puzzle at the end of time, given to us to solve.

The situation is not only an evolutionary precipice: It is a mythological return, familiar from many legends and folktales. The enemies of the people applied low-level magic — various techniques of black occultism, indoctrination, voodoo economics, and mass mind control — to get themselves into this position. Just as in the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Dune, and every other archetypal fantasy spectacle over the last century, we must use high magic, cunning, brilliance, creativity, pluck, perseverance, curiosity, forgiveness, vulnerability, and faith to get ourselves out of it.

Just as in those stories, at the beginning those about to be called to become the future heroes of the world have no idea what’s awaiting them. As they start to awaken to purpose and calling, they are pre-destined to encounter older mentors, wizards, and warriors who, for various reasons, gave up the fight, retired their wand or sword, were disgraced and cast out of society. These liminal figures come back together to fight and, against seeming impossible odds, win the final war. We appear destined to relive all of those movie / mythic cliches — just as deep down, we always knew we would.

Obviously because this is “real life” (although it doesn’t feel so real these days — more like a bad acid trip with no comedown in sight), things won’t happen exactly as they do in the movies. There is no guarantee we are going to persevere in this war or initiatory struggle for the light of consciousness against the darkness of diabolical despotism. The odds against us seem very daunting, overwhelming, at the moment. We’re also going to have to accept that the way it happens will be unanticipated, mysterious, sacred, trickster-ish. Just as the sudden pivot toward technocratic Fascism came as a sudden shock, there will be other surprising turns and twists ahead. How do we prepare ourselves for them?

This morning, as I write , I am finding, with wonder and astonishment, that I possess a faith I didn’t know I had. I feel a deep trust in the cosmic order and the Tao — the spiritual wisdom of nature and the invisible powers that protect and work for us. We have ancient stories written in our bones, inscribed in our genetic code: They prepared us for this time.

Deep down, we all recognize what is happening now: Collectively, this is the descent into the Underworld. This dark descent, our myths tell us, is absolutely inescapable and necessary before we can rise again. When we rise again, we will finally understand, know, be able to hold, and appropriately treasure the fragile light of being — to enact our responsibility for the Earth and its woven tapestry of organic life. We will have, once and for all, overcome the illusion of separation.

Let’s face it: Long before this devastating Trumpocalypse, our society was held in thrall by dark forces. Since I was born, I have lived in a murky world of greed, corruption, deceits, shrouded by invisible conspiracies and complicities, where wealth is attained by the unscrupulous and limited rationality is used to control and constrain the imagination.

Obviously, we needed a total breakdown of the old order to see our situation for what it is. Now it is up to us: We can either work together to break through and overcome. Or we can die. Or we will end up enslaved to techno-fascistic overlords, which would be, truly, a fate worse than death for ourselves and our children.

Trapped in reductive materialism, many people no longer believe they possess souls or spirits. They don’t believe any aspect of their being transcends the physical and quantifiable.
