I find myself torn between the competing desires to dive deep into the Satanic hell-scape of our current political moment — particularly, I thought to explore The Sovereign Individual, a book by two Libertarian extremists, promoting the destruction of the nation-state, which “tech-fash" overlords Peter Thiel and Mark Andreessen consider the blueprint for the future they intend to inflict on us — and the yearning to offer a straw of idealistic, utopian, even magical hope that we can clutch onto in this maelstrom. Right now, I am amazed by the huge gap of awareness between those who are terrified and those who still think Trump/Musk are “doing the right thing” by wrecking the government — while hacking directly into the US Treasury payments system — and, also, those who are fecklessly, blissfully unaware.
I was very happy to read Marcus Tisdale’s “Trump May Have Inadvertently Kicked Off The Next American Revolution” this morning, which efficiently summed up a lot of what I feel needs to be said — repeated, amplified — right now. More about this essay below.
I wish I didn’t agree so completely with Chris Hedges, who predicted all of this in American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America and many essays. In “The Empire Self-Destructs”, Hedges writes: “The billionaires, Christian fascists, grifters, psychopaths, imbeciles, narcissists and deviants who have seized control of Congress, the White House and the courts, are cannibalizing the machinery of state. These self-inflicted wounds, characteristic of all late empires, will cripple and destroy the tentacles of power. And then, like a house of cards, the empire will collapse.”
In stark terms, Hedges predicts what this collapse is going to mean for us here:
As the death spiral accelerates, phantom enemies, domestic and foreign, will be blamed for the demise, persecuted and slated for obliteration. Once the wreckage is complete, ensuring the immiseration of the citizenry, a breakdown in public services and engendering an inchoate rage, only the blunt instrument of state violence will remain. A lot of people will suffer, especially as the climate crisis inflicts with greater and greater intensity its lethal retribution…
Once the dollar is no longer the world’s reserve currency, something the dismantling of the empire guarantees, the U.S. will be unable to pay for its huge deficits by selling Treasury bonds. The American economy will fall into a devastating depression. This will trigger a breakdown of civil society, soaring prices, especially for imported products, stagnant wages and high unemployment rates. The funding of at least 750 overseas military bases and our bloated military will become impossible to sustain. The empire will instantly contract. It will become a shadow of itself. Hypernationalism, fueled by an inchoate rage and widespread despair, will morph into a hate-filled American fascism.
I agree with Hedges, as I noted last time, that Trump2 is a sign of the collapse of American hegemony, as well as a massive acceleration of this tailspin . Musk’s companies, we know, received $15 billion in government contracts and were also getting investigated by many of the agencies he is now gutting.

The Silicon Valley tech overlord’s intermeshed empires may be far more fragile than we commonly understand. For instance, I didn’t realize that, globally, Teslas are far less popular than a much less expensive Chinese electric car, produced by BYD and sold everywhere around the world, except for the US where there is a 100% tariff on them and people can’t purchase them. (Business Insider reports: “Ford CEO Jim Farley said last month that smaller, cheaper EVs would be key for driving sales growth. Yet neither Ford nor Tesla appear close to launching a vehicle that could compete price-wise with BYD hatchbacks like the $11,000 Seagull”). Senator Josh Hawley just introduced a bill that would make it illegal for Americans to download Deep Seek, the cheap Chinese clone of ChatGPT. Fear of Chinese competition in the tech space may be one of the main reasons for the tech overlords’ rushed, full-frontal assault on Democracy.
It is fascinating, in a bad and creepy way, to see so many people, blinded by misdirected malice and racism, colluding in their destruction and the fleecing of the country. I keep trying to engage with MAHA / MAGA / Trump supporters on my Facebook page. Finally even their most intelligent defense of what is happening makes no sense. We are seeing an incomprehensible adolescent tantrum, a descent into insanity, on a nationwide scale.
One commenter on my Facebook post summed this up well:
They are sick of real debate and facts from 'so-called experts' because the result of all that came in years ago - they are wrong. The MAGA way is to end the game by overturning the table, knocking all the pieces to the floor, trashing the room and claiming victory, screaming all the while about having been betrayed, lied to, cheated, and let down by all the people who criticized them, implicitly or explicitly, by opposing their prejudice. All of this is motivated by the fear of white privilege coming to an end. Blame Obama — he really scared them. It is an existential threat, to which they respond by refusing to engage. They boast about this, with their pride in 'owning the libs' by simply refusing to engage meaningfully and ignoring all norms of truth, empathy and compassion. It's all about defending their deeply narcissistic self-image. They are doing the social equivalent of going into an epic, nation-wide narcissistic rage. Their self-image has been irreparably dented by their realization that they are just people, like all those they despise. The USA has NPD.
One commenter responded to the sporadic defense of Musk as a “disruptor” by pointing out the following:
