Love this conversation. I think Ivan Illich had much to say about the loss of tools of conviviality that create community and how the view of society at the root of the liberal order is the individualism inherent in Hobbes and Locke. Birthing a postliberal world must be based on how to regenerate community and to break the hyper individualistic cocoon we live in that makes us docile consumers and lonely hungry ghosts.

In terms of organising collective collaboration towards building social cohesion, that resonates the values you both speak about, it was inspiring to witness a man and a woman publicly having the kind of conversation that you both advocate needs to happen more. Emanative teaching is about embodying the change you want to grow and create more of. Please don’t underestimate the power of the conversation you had here together and the positive ripple effect it is having. You spoke about listening and understanding one another as the approach to building trusting and bonded relationships and in my experience this is an intelligence of the heart, and less the intellect and there were moments when the passion rose within you Grace that was deeply moving and impactful. The fear of expressing yourself publicly that you mentioned Daniel is undoubtedly the greatest barrier to achieving the change we yearn for because it stops us evolving and connecting through feelings of sincerity. I’m grateful to both of you for your energy and modelling of what’s possible in communicating care for the fate of others.

Excellent interview, I just subscribed to Grace's Substack. And Daniel, I wanted to say thank you for inviting the women to discuss their expertise, this is quite valuable to me. Cheers, Lesley

Thanks for this interview. Hadn’t yet ‘met’ Blakeley on Substack. She’s terrifically thoughtful and clear coming from a Marxist perspective on capitalism, which is so refreshing and so very much needed more in our conversations about what is to be done. I just subscribed to her newsletter and look forward to engaging with her there!

She’s brilliant. Everyone that I been introduced to via Novara Media generally is. Looking forward to reading her book.

Thanks Darin! Hope you enjoy the book

From a distance, there seems to be an upswell of resistance in the US in the form of “Hands Off Movement” l. Is this something that will be helpful? What are your thoughts on these?

Great stuff! I wrote about federal workers organising against Trump here https://substack.com/@graceblakeley/p-161015996

SHEEREST BRISTLING, BRILLIANCE...ALIVE IN ALLEGIANCE WITH THE

FLOWERING OF SENTIENCE. IT DOESN'T SEEM ALL THAT SURPRISING THAT IN A CORRUPT OLIGARCHICAL CARTEL LIKE THE USA, LEFTIST/RADICAL GROUPS AREN'T #1 FINANCIALLY. WE GO TO WAR AGAINST COMMUNISTS/SOCIALIST COUNTRIES AND EVEN U.S. INDIVIDUALS. THE BEST OF LIVE PODCAST...CRACKLING, COMPASSIONATE REGARDS.

If that's the title of your next book Grace, please put me right at the very top of your pre-order list.

Good discussion on how states exist for corporations. And the similarities between Henry Ford's days and today, right down to the automobile oligarch. The difference between 100 years ago and today is that corporations/states have continued to grow, so corporations are multinational, state reach and power are global. That has driven the planet into overshoot, with species extinction, deforestation, dwindling mineral and oil reserves, climate chaos, and plastic waste pollution. Looking out the side window, then and now are similar, but looking ahead today is a cliff.

Excellent discussion! I so much enjoyed your 'intellectual range', and the clarity and fluidity of your responses, Grace, and I deeply appreciate the real authenticity of your insightful questions and responses, Daniel. Thank you very much, each and both.//

In the legacy and lineage of dialogic philosophy, am sharing here in the hope that naming 'trustworthiness' as guiding dynamic concept may be of value. Trustworthiness in connection is life-giving at every relational level. Wherever we, as persons, as communities, as 'The People' of the US seeking lived democratic ideals, choose to participate in actualizing trustworthy relations, we all benefit. Listening, speaking, holding the Other in RESPECT, but ALSO holding them - and ourselves - in ACCOUNT is the core effort. Saying what we mean, meaning what we say, doing what we say we are going to do seems so wanting in these times.

Just saying... i think it matters ALOT, and it's been so useful for me for a lifetime.

Great stuff as usual but my jaw almost hit the floor when you said that the 1940s tide of fascism was staunched by America, and not the Soviet Union. Are you communist-blind? They sacrificed millions to rescue the world from Nazism and were the actual ideological counterweight to what fascism represents. Fascism is just capitalism in extremis, and the Nazi philosophies of autarky, lebensraum, and genocidal eugenics were copied directly from US history.

Today that ideological counterweight is China.

I think you may still mistakenly believe a lot of sinophobic CIA propaganda about the nature and structure of post-revolutionary China. Imagine a society actually mandated to improve its people's lives and protect its environment. Imagine a government that actually governs more or less by consensus rather than a hilariously unproductive left-right pitched battle. Imagine an all-time potent military force that hasn't dropped a bomb in decades.

The ongoing experiment there - and the deeply, ideologically "progressive" worldview motivating it - is obviously and demonstrably a superior model to the genocidal and ecocidal American/Zionazi empire that is now in its trashing decline. Definitely recommend exploring it further. The recent Upstream series is a good place to start.

OK, I am definitely hearing a mixed message here. On one hand we’re not supposed to debate and engage in persuasion and yet we’re supposed to go out and talk to people. This is extremely black and white and I do not believe it’s her intention. I believe she understands fully the gray area where we need to get out and talk about politics all the time as if it’s the most noble important thing as it actually is for our survival.

Grace Blakeley's avatar

You’ve unintentionally hit on a very important point. There’s a huge difference between talking to people to persuade, with compassion empathy and understanding, and debating people, which is more about convincing the other side of the rightness of your own ideas. If you try to batter people into accepting your worldview, you’ll just alienate them even more.

RasalilaRose's avatar

oh, I am so upset right now. I had just praised this interviewee for their wisdom, and now they are trying to preach ‘Don’t talk about politics’.

Politics are noble. Politics are spiritual.

Politics are of greatest essence to the evolution of our species on earth.

IMO, there is nothing of higher priority then contributing as a political being to the self governance of the people, by the people, for the people.
