Grateful for your brilliant writing. Just last week was feeling the lack of intelligent criticism around NFTs - your piece makes many important points about the new form and why Beeple is important. thank you Daniel
Succinct piece. Trying to compare this moment to early modernism, say Malevich reducing it all—form & subject-to a condensed Black (all pigmentation hues end in black) Square. One quiet wishing a Bolchevick Revolution, the other loud as the News. And only time will tell what stays and what goes…
Michael Brownstein Comment #2: Actually I like this image of Beeple's art with the toxic inversion of the Goddess, it's where we're at now. But why is he paid so much for it? Capitalism is the monster in the room which almost no one addresses directly. Without capitalism there would be no killer vaccines running riot, there would be no Bill Gates. Here's a quote from Terence McKenna that says it all: "In the shamanic age there was no need for monuments, for wealth, for classes." So I'll amend the Trotsky quote: "When I hear the word capitalism I reach for my drum."
A great question is his art any good - are Beeple's NFT worth the money?
Well of course this answer is for art collectors- de buyers to determine.
in their Contemporary cryptic crypto digital turmoil spills...
IMHO, for an investor? Yes, it is likely a solid short-term for sure... long term???
Valuable to culture? I wish it were so valuable as to be of help to mankind $69m for a common good cause.
If only it reflected $69m worth of that... for real... But I don't see this.
Beeple himself is a great artistic talent especially for showing what is possible for one person to do... make $69M in a day, I mean churn out 'art' like a machine...

I prefer Android Jones vibe...
An enjoyable, interesting read. In Beeple I see Ron English, Witkin, La Chappelle and Adbusters.
